Local Activities
There are a number of outdoor activities that you can enjoy when you stay in Owhango. If you are interested in hiking and walking there are some local tracks and a pretty heavy duty mountain bike track called the 42nd Traverse very close to Forest Lodge.
The Whakapapa River is close by for Trout Fishing and a 35 minute drive away will see you in the carpark at Whakapapa ready to explore a range of Snow Activities.

Trout Fishing
Whakapapa river is only a 20 minute walk away and is the largest tributary of the Whanganui River and one of “New Zealand’s finest trout fisheries”.

Hiking Tracks
Whether it be 5 minutes or 5 days, there is something suitable for everyone. Most of these walks are within 30 minutes of Forest Lodge or a short drive away.

Snow Activities
Mt Ruapehu is about a half an hours drive away and is the home to New Zealand’s two largest Ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa with 1800 hectares of serious room to move.

Cycle Trails
The Ruapehu is becoming quite famous for the cycle trails and mountain biking tracks. From the National Cycleway, Mountains to Sea, Timber Trail, Fishers Track and many more.
Other Activities
Jetboating
A jetboat trip on the Whanganui river is a must do experience. Soak up the culture of the river while having an adrenalin ride. Trips can be arranged for the keen fly fisherman and access to the Bridge to Nowhere. The river is part of the Te Aroroa trail and jet boat shuttles are available for walkers and mountain bikers.
