Forest Lodge is located on the Te Aroroa trail at the beginning of the 42nd Traverse. Our large deck, fully equipped kitchen and comfy lounge are here to relax you after a hard ride. Use our secure lockup for your bikes and laundry facilities to see you away refreshed. We offer bed and self- catered breakfast and can organise your shopping for dinner if required.

Bike Transfers/Shuttles

Leave your vehicle in safe and secure surrounding with your hosts at Forest Lodge .

Be dropped off at the beginning of the 42nd and end with a hot shower right back in your comfortable accommodation and relax by the log fire in the lounge .

We can relocate your vehicle for you for a small charge. We are keen mountain bikers and like to hear about your experiences and can advise on suitable ebikes for the trip

42nd  Traverse

Known as one of the best adventure mountain bike rides in The North Island, the 42nd Traverse is a 46 km multi use track through Tongariro Forest Conservation Area. The Grade 3 Trail will take riders 3-7 hours with a number of sections to test your fitness and skill level. It is best ridden from the Tongariro end, you will encounter long climbs and thrilling downhills with one river crossing.

Mountains to the Sea Cycleway

Ohakune Mountain Road, Ohakune Old Coach Road, Ruatiti and Middle Roads, Maungapurua Track, Whanganui River Road, Upokongaro to the Tasman Sea. Beginning on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu and ending in the city of Whanganui.

The trail includes many separate sections and will take 3-5 days. The Grade 2-4 trails are a combination of local trails, public roads and a jet-boat ride. The Maungapurua Track is a grade 4 and can be very tricky with big drop-offs. Some of this section is better walked. A lot of work is going in to upgrading and adding sections to this trail.

The Timber Trail

This is very popular family 85 km ride from Pureora to Ongarue through spectacular ancient Native Forest.

Expect to be surprised by the 8 large suspension bridges, the largest being  141 meters over the Maramataha River.

Take time for the bird song which includes the very rare haunting song of the Kokako. At the 74km mark is the Ongarure Spiral, an incredible feat of engineering, a small gauge railway line for transporting logs.

Fishers Track

An excellent track for beginner riders.

A 17 km track starting at the National Park Railway Station.

A short climb on a metal road to the summit with mountain views then it is all downhill  including a 6km ride through beautiful farmland, ending in Retaruke or alternatively ride back up the hill to Raurimu.
